LATE LOCALS.

Members are reminded that the annual meeting of the Municipal Band takes place at the band room on Wednesday night at 8.30 o’clock.—Advt.

Another effort is being made to form a small company to work the sluicing claim near Ahaura formerly owned by the Hochstetter Goldfields, which has been closed down for several years.About £50,000 of Sydney and local capital was used in making a waterrace from Lake Hochstetter to the claim, but sluicing operations were not profitable and were carried on only for two or three years before closing down.

The Kuinara State School, which was destroyed by fire in August, 1928, has been rebuilt on the same site, and on Monday last the scholars reassembled there. The committee and parents are well pleased at tbo expeditious manner in which the rebuilding was carried out and a letter of appreciation was sent to the Board complimenting the foreman and staff on the very line building.

In spite of the number of those out of work who have been found employment on the Grey-Westport coast road and on the Buffer Gorge railway, tho number still looking for work is reported to be increasing in this district. An employer of labour, seen by a press representative expressed the opinibn that there was something in the suggestion that men were leaving other employment, where conditions were not so favourable, and taking the diance of being employed on the road or railwayconstruction work in tbo Buffer Gorge, where pay and hours were more attractive. It was a question as to whether or not the position Was open to exploitation.
