STABBING CHARGE

(By Telegraph—Press Association). DUNEDIN, February 7. On four counts ranging from attempted murder to doing bodily harm, Arnold Hinds, a native of West Indies, was tried at the Supreme Court to-av, following the wounding otf a taxi driver, named Norman Maitland Clarence Childs, on wharf on January 14th, by plunging a knife into his chest near the heart. Childs in evidence stated he took beer to the firemen’s quarters on the Maimoa. Four bottles were opened and drunk. Later lie was phoned again by a man Tamlin, and went to Maimoa. They left the vessel together and went aboard the steamer Blomfontein to inspect the engines. They got permission from an officer. They came up from the engine-room with another black man, who had promised to give them a souvenir. Accused, who was standing outside the engine room, stopped witness and refused to allow him to go to the other black’s cabin for the souvenir. Witness tried to pass, but accused grabbed' him and ran him to the gangway. Witness was half way down when accused said: “We don’t want you white on board.” "Witness said: “ Come down here and say that.” Accused came down and witness on reaching the wharf turned' to meet him. Hinds rushed at him with his right hand forward and witness felt a knife going in his left side. The case is proceeding.
