IMPRISONED IN LIFT. (Australian Press Association) (United Service.) SYDNEY, Feb. 4. When a lift failed between the floors at McJ I rath’s premises at mid-day on Saturday, an elderly employee, Charles Cruiekslianks, was trapped. Relatives Sound him after lie had been imprisoned for 26 hours. CONSTABLE’S PREDICAMENT (Received this day at. 11 p.m., SYDNEY, Feb. 4. One of the water police, Constable Brown, had a thrilling experience of being marooned all night on the rocks off Doohryod Point, opposite Sydney Heads, beside the corpse of a drowned man, John Lutge, aged 63. The latter’s boat bad capsized in 'treacherous waters and Brown, in attempting a rescue, was cut off hv the rising tide. He had to sit on a narrow ledge of rock throughout the night with spray breaking over him. Lutge’s body was , recovered by the police yesterday morning, after being hauled through the water on a rope. Brown reached safety by scaling the rocks. This part of the harbour which is known as Bombora, has claimed many victims during recent years. INCENDIARISM. MELBOURNE, February 4. A fire near huge stacks of timber at Roucli Proprietary’s yards, West Melbourne, was extinguished easily'; Evidence of attempted incendiarism was found. TALKING FILM. MELBOURNE, Feb. 4. During the screening of a sound film, featuring Mussolini, at the Auditorium, groups of Italians in various parts of the theatre made a hostile demonstration against him. They were shouts of “Traitor, who killed our countrymen?” There were other offensive remarks. The talking film of King George opening Tyne Bridge, was loudly cheered. A CLOUD BURST. BRISBANE, Feb. 4. A message from Eumundi says a terrific- heat wave was experienced in the coastal districts and culminated in a cloudburst. Ten and a-lialf inches of rain were recorded in two hours. Crops were flattened, fences and roads washed out and a sixty .foot bridge washed away. The railway line was damaged and the services disrupted.
