BYRD’S EXPEDITION

(Ry Russell Owen—Copyrighted 1928 by the New York Times Company, and St. Loins Post Dispatch. All rights for publication reserved throughout the world. to New York Times.) ELEANOR BOLLING SAILS. (Received this clay at 11.25. a.m.) BAY OF WHALES, February 4. The Eleanor Bolling passed out of sight- on her way back to Dunedin. Bbe was unloaded in five and a-balf days. Alter the barrier broke the remainder of the load was put- aboard the City of New York and our decks are piled high again with aeroplane pans, drums of gasolene, coal, crates of eggs, and meats. The City of New York is tied alongide the bay ice again and is miles nearer the camp than before. This makes the haul much easier. The ice appears firm close to the shore but the men use a rope, tying themselves together when there is a doubt about j a footing. The unloading of the C.'ity j of New York can go on slowly and carefully now. as the necessity for baste lias to some degree passed. Unloading at the barrier was forced upon Byrd by circumstances. He had anticipated such a contingency and bad determined to attempt it if the bay ice became too thin. When the Polling arrived, heavy material had t > be unloaded, and the barrier offered !ho only opportunity of getting it safo'v off the ship. Jt was a risky, hut ‘list work. All this material was shifted over to the harrier and run far hack from the edge in two days. The. Eleanor Rolling is now on her way hack to New Zealand and there is a possibility she may make another trip.
