LEADS TO ASSAULT. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WKLLIXGTOX, January HI. A special sitting of the .Magistrate’s Court was held by .Mr Page at the Wellington Hospital to-day. when James Smith, a labourer, aged 23, was charged that with intent to do grievous bodily harm, in that he did actual bodily harm to Joint Leaf. The allegation of the plaintiff, wlm hardly spoke above a whisper throughout, was that he went to stay at -Mrs Perry’s house. Xo. 222. CubStreet, and that on Friday evening, two men brought some bottles of beer with them to a party in the house. Witness said that all went well tiii eleven o’clock, when one of the men proposed a toast objectionable to witness. on account of some retereave to his colour. Mrs Perry told witness that one of the men did not like coloured men, and objected to drinking with them. There was an argument, and the complainant said that he got up from his seat to strike the man who made the toast, and he was then hit by the other man 'from behind. Leaf said that he was a ship’s fireman, and l.c had left the Kuapohn at Auckland. The ease was adjourned till February 1 (Ith. Hail was not asked lor.
