BIG GAME ANGLERS
SOME GREAT CATCHES. 'By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) THAMES, Jan. ‘3l. Yesterday Zanc Grey's party took four swordfish and one inako. lho fishing was most spectacular, since three boats struck fish at the same moment, and in the launch ol Zane Grey two fish were lighting at once. On their launch, Romer Grey and Carney each had a fish also on at the same time. The morning proved the most favourable for fish since the run of the Marlin set in on the coast. These fish have been feeding on a school of trevalli. Up till middady, five minutes was sufficient to hook a swordie. In barney’s case, the fish jumped twentytwo times, almost encircling the launches, from which a wonderful series of movies was obtained, and also set photos unique in the history of big game angling in New Zealand. This fish went fully 50 yards on its tail, upright, above the surface of the water. Romer Grey's fish was not so active, hut breached a number of times. At the same time, the launch “Waiiiiiio,’ with Reynolds’ party. from Hamilton, was fast to a Marlin, and Zane Grey himself was also last to a Marlin. All of these four swordies wore being played within an area of an acre, breaching and fighting amongst the launches. In the ‘*)\niomo,’ Morpeth lost his fish, but the other launches killed theirs. The following were the kills:— R. Carney (launch “Zane Grey”), a striped marlin weighing 315 pounds. Romer Grey (same launch), simultaneously, a striped marlin of 2501b.5. Zane Grey (launch “Alma G”), a striped marlin weighing 3001bs. These three fish were landed together. Later in the day Romer Grey got fast to a inako. which he landed alter a hard fight. It weighed 3001 bs. Then Zane Grey not fast to n small but hard-lighting marlin of 2501b5. which put up the best display of the day, breaching seventeen times in amongst the launches. Captain Mitchell trolled the outer bank, and was unsuccessful, but lie attempted to gaff a. huge turtle, which was over five feet across the shell. This day’s five fish brings the total of the party’s catch to forty-seven, which includes inako and striped marlin only, not including the common sharks that have been caught.
