COOK STRAIT SWIM

ATTEMPT FAILS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 1. Miss Copplcstoiie made an attempt to swim Cook Strait this morning. She entered the water at 12.21 a.m. hut owing to coldness gave up at 1.28 a.m. She returned to -Wellington by launch. COLD, THE DECIDING FACTOR. WELLINGTON, Fell. 1. Cold, said Miss Copplcstoiie this morning, was the deciding factor. For tlie first half hour it was not so bad, but after that it was unbearable. No amount of oil or grease will keep'thatcold out and cold will prevent the Strait being swum. The conditions otherwise were perfect hist night, and I am confident the distance would not have beaten me. It was only the coldness of the water that beat me and I think it will Lent any other swimmer who attempts the feat.
