MOTOR FALLS IN RIVER
FAMILY’S ESCAPE

A miraculous escape from serious injury in a motor accident when tlieir car crashed over a bridge crossing the Makarewa River at Wallacetown was the experience of Mr F. Simpson, Superintendent of the Invercargill Fire Brigade, and his family, when returning to Invercargill from Colac Baton Monday evening. After rounding a curve on to the bridge, the car failed \to straiglitsen up in time, and insteiod of continuing straight across lurched to one side, and -went through the wooden balntsrade into the river. The car appears to have turned a complete somersault as it fell, and it landed in fairly deep water, and the party was in -danger of drowning. Air Simpson, with some difficulty, managed to get his head clear, and struggle free, and the rest of the family were assisted to safety. Mr Simpson sustained a nasty wound near the eye, but was otherwise not seriously injured, while the members of his family suffered principally from shock. MOTOR COLLISION. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 29. An accident in which a, motor cyclist was .seriously injured occurred this morning, and as tin* result Edward Williams, aged 21, was admitted to .Southand Hospital, suffering from a fractured skull. A taxi was travelling north along Dee Street, and had turned to cross to the opposite side of the street, when a motor cycle which Williams was riding in a southerly direction hit the side of the Jar. The rider was thrown off, and his head was struck. An operation was performed this morning, and if was reported this afternoon that lii.s condition uas critical. J
