SHEEP STEALING
FARMER CHARGED

INVERCARGILL, Jan. 29.
At a. sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at AY in ton to-day, Charles Edward Cnlder, farmer, residing near Dip ton, was charged with stealing 55 sheep valued at £llO, the property of Arthur Gerard and Sons. The offence was alleged to have taken place on or about October Kith. last. During the hearing of the case, a confession stated to have been signed hv ('alder, was produced, in which aa-K (•used agreed to soli his farm and leave the district within six weeks,* and to refrain from working on any laud adjoining that of Gerard’s. Detective Sergeant Hewitt said he had interviewed accused at his brother’s 1 arm on January sth., and showed him the confession. Calder had acknowledged the signature “0. Calder,” but said he had read the confession l>v the light of a torch. Asked why he had signed tlie confession, Calder-had replied: “Gerard is a bigger man than I.”
Accused, who pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the , Supreme Court in Invercargill. was allowed in one surety of £IOO. v v
