BETTING CHARGES
CHRISTCHURCH CASES

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 29 Charges, following on recent gaming raids, were heard by Air Mosley S.M. today. Six people were charged. Herbert George Taylor pleaded not guilty to carrying on the business of a bookmaker. There were five other charges of having made bets on horse races at totalisator odiks.
Evidence was given of several bets made by constables with the accused -Co in an hotel bar. When arrested and / searched lie had £52 in his possession, a bookmaker’s acceptance card, also a . communication issued by the New Zealand Sportsmen’s Association. Taylor was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, on bail of £IOO, and one surety of £IOO. William Stanton pleaded not guilty to a charge of keeping a common gaming house. Stanton, itlLwas stated, Kept a tobacconist’s shop, and policemen made several bets with him. A search discovered records of betting business in the shop. The defence was that Stanton was occasionally asked by customers to m “get money on” for them, and he ac- 'V. cepted sums, afterwards negotiating wagers with bookmakers. ’ The Magistrate directed that this information be amended to one of having made a bet with a bookmaker. Stanton pleaded guilty to the amended charge, and was fineu £ls; ■ A charge against a youth, Murray Edward Best MeClenry, employed in Stanton’s shop, of having assisted in the conduct of a gaming house, was withdrawn.
