Chid Officer Manning, and other officers and men of the liner America who partook in the rescue of the crew of the Italian freighter Florida, wore given a tumultuous reception, culminating in an official greeting by Mayor Walker, who presented them witli scrolls of honour. All Broadway from the Battery to the City Hall was lined with thousands of cheering men and women. The rescuers drove through a town of paper and ticker tape.
