N.S.W. COAL CRISIS

). - PREMIER’S ATTITUDE. ' (Australian Press Association) (United Service.) SYDNEY, January 28. Consequent on the coal miners’ refusal to accept the State Government's scheme (including a cut in pay of one shilling xior ton) for the rehabilitation of the coal industry, the Commonwealth's offer of one shilling per ton subsidy, has officially lapsed, which is viewed gravely by the Premier of New South AVales, Air Bavin, who doubts whether it would be possible to have it renewed.

The Commonwealth Government’s action in promising a bounty to the New South AA’nles industry at the expense of the other States, lias, Air Bavin says, caused a storm of disapproval. Mr Bruce (Federal Premier) therefore will hesitate before renewing the offer. Mr Bavin added: “My chief regret is that the Miners’ Federation appears to have taken the view that its duty does not consist in setting the coal industry on its feet, but is only concerned to advance the special interest of its own members. That attitude will get us nowhere,” Air Bavin has not yet concluded his discussions with the coal owners, but it is expected that their attitude wiil be defined before the end of ibis week. Mr S. Bruce (Federal Premier) telegraphed to-day that the Federal Government lias no intention of conducting an inquiry into the coal industry on the lines suggested by the Miners’ Federation. He added that the question of handling the coal situation is entirely one for the New South Wales State Government.

This message from Mr Bruce has dissipated tlie miners last hope. It has caused the miners’ representatives marked disappointment.
