ARAPUNI DAM
REPORTED UNSAFE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, Jan. 26. Grave, doubts as to the. stability of tbo Arapuni Da,in are held by Air 11. at. Chrystall, Consulting Engineer, of ■Christchurch, after an inspection of the dam site yesterday. Mr Chrystall said that when be was Consulting Engineer for one of the tendering companies, be bold grave doubts as to the suitability of rhyolite ask for a dam even of the gravity tvpe. Yesterday lie bad inspected the diversion tunnel. He found that water was through the concrete walls and was spouting through the floor, that is two feet six inches thick. There also was erosion at the headrace. .Mr Chrytsall considered it tbo duty of the Government immediately to assess the actual danger, and to provide ample facilities for warning the people who are in the danger zone, so that they could escape in the event of the dam breaking.
