A WRONG ARREST

CAIRNS, January 25

The police have again arrested tinwrong man in connection with the lioonjie murder (cabled on Aug. 7tb).

A man recently detained at Thursday Island arrived under escort at Cairns to-day. He now declares his name is not Kolby. whom the police want, but Gordon Franks, which is confirmed. He also repudiates the allegation that he murdered Wallers. Tiie police are convinced he is not the man wanted.

COAL INDUSTRY

The position of the coal industry remains critical. A meeting of colliery proprietors will he held next week, when it is expected some definite action will lie taken. It is pointed out that during the last twelve months four collieries have .gone.. into liquidation, and existing conditions cannot continue.

TWO BOYS DROWNED

Unable to swim, two boys. 'Garnet Riley, aged nine, and Archibald Bridges, aged twelve, were drowned in Yowie Bay. near Port Hawking, when an old punt in which they were playing sank. A third lad managed to struggle ashore.

An Tneverell messages states that after eating a-n evening meal three rah biters. William Ford, aged 32, Batrick Proud foot, 28. and Claude Donnelly, 24, became violently ill. Ford bad made damper and accidentally used arsenic instead of soda. Proudfool although suffering terrible agony walked three miles to the nearest township for assistance. Ford died in the hospital, and Proudfuot is not expected to recover.
