SAMOAN ARRESTS

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST POLICE. AUCKLAND, January 21, The story of the arrest of Tamasese and the methods being employed by the police in Samoa to arrest natives resisting payment of taxes was told by All’s Tamasese, a liigh cliieftainess, who arrived with her three children by the Tofua to-day. “The police have been raiding houses at night-time,” she said. “They came with torchlights and tried to take people while asleep. Later they adopted the method of surrounding houses early in the morning. Few of the leaders or elderly people were taken, hut quite a number of young men.” When Tamasese was arrested in the early morning, remarked his wife, she resented the action by pushing one of the constables. “Me struck me on the arm,” she added, “ and one of the military police hit me on the head. J know what Tamasese has suffered tor his people and have come to stand by him while he is in gaol.” Airs Tamasese speaks English fluently.
