STATEMENT IN COMMONS

Mr Baldwin's statement in the Commons on the Channel tunnel is generally welcomed in all political quarteis. The project will he discussed by the Tunnel Parliamentary Committee on Wednesday. A member of the Commons, Sir Bull (Chairman of Tunnel Committee) says |, e is well satisfied with the position. He could not expect Mr Baldwin lo go further as he has raised the question of party polities. “We will now get t„ the bottom of the matter. No doubt the money would he loiind immediately. France and Italy are willing to put up the whole amount, hut they agree that England must have hnaneh. I control. Jt will cost roughly thirty millions and take lour and a-half vonrs to construct.”
