FATAL ACCIDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WHANGAREI, January 22. By the capsizing of a metal lorry over bank on Towai-Kawakawa road early this morning, Ray Wilson, a young single man, sustained injuries which culminated in his demise when being conveyed to Kawakawa Hospital. V ilson was pinned beneath tiic vehicle and not extricated until a considerable time later. GIRL KILLED. WHANG AREI, January 22. Entangled in a leading rope, a girl of seventeen years, Myrtle Patterson, only chi Id* of Ralph and -Mrs Patterson, of Marsden Point, Whangarei Harbour, was dragged around a paddock by a horse, sustaining terrible injuries, including a broken neck. She was picketi up dead. The tragedy occurred at 2 p.ni. yesterday. FALSE PRETENCES. AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. At the Police Court five men, mostly firemen, were sentenced each to one month’s imprisonment by Mr McKean, S.M., for obtaining sums totalling 1.7 s fid from the R.S.A. by means of forged. receipts, representing they had done work on which the R.S.A. paid a subsidy. BAKERS’ CONFERENCE. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. The Annual Conference of New Zealand, Master Bakers’ and Pastrycooks’ Association opened this morning, Mr T. S. Searle (Dunedin) presiding. After a welcome by the Deputy-Mayor and President of the Chamber of Commerce, Hon Cob be addressed the Conference, and said be would not be one to interfere with legitimate private enterprise. Ho believed in private enterprise and believed that a man running bis own business was better qualified to deal with it than any government. INQUEST VERDICT. TE KUITI, January 22. An inquest was held last night on Amos Augustus Avery, who died from burns sustained at an undertaker’s factory. A verdict was returned that deceased met his death by the explosion of methylated spirits, assisted by fire and smoke from the burning building. The Coroner added a rider that the attention of the Minister o'f Labour should bo drawn to the necessity for a regulation providing safeguard in factories where methylated spirts were used. BURNS SUSTAINED. TE KUITI, January 22. A similar accident occurred this morning when J. Hodgson received burns on bis face and head by the explosion of a primus lamp. Hodgson was pumping the lamp when the primus cap blew off and the contents Cf tins lamp spurted over his face and head. His injuries are not serious.
