SUICIDE IN SAMOA.
ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL. (By Telegraph —-Pre.se Association). AUCKLAND, January 21. Captain R. J. Carter, the head of the Samoan Labour Department, arrived here by the Tofua to-day. Ho was asked 111 regard to the suicide of a high official in Samoa after the visit of an Investigation Committee from New Zealand. Captain Carter said that a shortage bail been discovered in the accounts of the repatriated estates. The suicide was the accountant,' who considered that lie was responsible. because lie had charge ol the accounts. This had preyed on Ill’s mind. Another officer who was employed in the storekeeper’s branch of the same Department, was arrested, and was charged with defalcations, lie pleaded guilty, and he was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment.
