PLUNIvKT SHIELD. AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Assn., Copyright. AUCKLAND, Jan. 19. At the close of the second day’s play at Eden Park in the Plunket Shieitl match, between Auckland and Wellington, honours rest decidedly with the visitors. Wellington’s first innings score was carried from 368 for 9 to 403 this morning, and in reply Auckland scored 308 for the loss of nine wickets. Conditions were again ideal and the wicket continued to play well, except that an occasional ball kept low. 'there was a large attendance in the afternoon. Auckland’s batting was more than a. little disappointing, seeing that there were really only two periods when the Wellington bowlers were on top. Auckland lost the line opening fiair—Bowlo.v and Mills, when Henderson took over the bowling, although Bow ley was unfortunate in playing on a hall which would novel have .howled him. With two down for 20, Weir and Postlcs became associated in a- line partnership, which improved matters considerably. \lci: gave tiic slightly better exhibition, although the batting of both was characeriscd by a rockliko defence. A bright spot in the innings was the batting of Gillespie, who made 78 in brilliant style. It is doubtful whether a liner display of log hitting lias boon seen at Eden Park, since S. G. Smith was in his prime. The Auckland batsmen did not use enough enterprise in playing the tired bowling, although McGirr with a new ; ball after tea was very dangerous for a few overs. Henderson was again the most successful bowler for Wellington. The Eden Park wicket evidently suits him. The ball with which he bowled .Mills was a beauty. McGirr and Rotlieram were both accurate, but Lowry did not make ' sufficient use of Lambert. Altogether nine bowlers were tried. | A regrettable incident occurred in j the afternoon, when Empire I urton had to speak to Lowry about a remark 1 made by Henderson, when a decision went against him. COMMENT ON TEST TEAM. (Received this day at H a.m.) LONDON, January 19. The “Observer” slates the Australian selectors seem to surprise home critics as much ns ours. Since the rubber is lost, it might have been expected that an experiment would have been made in the remaining tests, with an eye to the future. It is difficult to understand the overlooking of Bettinglon and other players with 'formidable claims, hut conservatism is not only tonfined to the Old Country.
