AO El) A lAN’S TRAOIC END. (By Telegraph—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 15. Clarence Shannon, aged 70. who resided at North Drigllton, died in hospital. He was found in his home with his throat cut from ear to ear. INFANT KILLED. AUCKLAND, Jan. 10. A two-year-old child, Dawn Douglas, daughter of Mr and Mrs Stanley Douglas. of Tckopuru, was killed on the Kangapakapa Road, eight miles from Melensvile, at mid-day. Tim family was travelling' hv car. while on holiday. 'When the accident happened, Douglas was driving, and the wheels were caught in a rut and became locked, causing the car to capsi//\ In an effort to save "her child, Mrs Douglas threw the infant out of the window, but the car turned over on it .causing injuries which were instantly fatal. The other occupants of the ear were uninjured. Mr and Airs Douglas have a drapery business in Tckopuru. FIRE AT WAJIII. WAIHI. January 17. Two adjoining premises in Alain Street occupied by Waihi Mutual Cooperative Trading Association as general grocery store and hoot shop, were destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. Splendid work by the Fire Brigade saved the spread of the conflagration to the adjoining premises. The grocery stock was insured for £IBOO in Yorkshire office and the boot stock for £9OO in the same office. The buildings valued at £IBOO were owned by \V. J. Brown and insured in London, Liverpool and Globe for £7OO. -MUSICAL DIRECTOR. WELLINGTON, January 17. ■ An arrival by the Corinthic to-day from home was Mr AV. ET. Dixon, who has come to the Dominion to take charge of Christchurch Royal Choral Society. He is accompanied by his wife and their two little girls. BANKR LTT SOLICTTOR. CHRISTCHURCH, January 17. This morning Constable L. J. Brazier left for Bluff en route for Melbourne where he will ask for the surrender and return to New Zealand of John Black Batchelor, the bankrupt Christchurch solicitor. Batchelor was arrested in Melbourne on January 7th, six months after his departure from this city. In August a warrant was issued for his arrest for alleged theft of £9BO. STABBING CHARGE. DUNEDIN, January 17. Arnold ITiiuls, a coloured quartermaster on the steamer Bloemfontein, arrested in connection with stabbing Norman Maitland Chilcls, appeared at the Police Court to answer a charge ol assault so as to do bodily harm. Detective-Sergt. Nutall asked for a remand till January 23rd to call two witnesses from the steamer Maimoa. Mr Hanlon for accused was allowed to call evidence for the defence. Edwin Branch, a quartermaster, stated he saw no signs of a Tcnife or blood about Hinds. William Robert Cherry, second officer, stated after invesitgating the disturbances on the deck, Hinds reported visitors to the ship had been causing trouble. Some of the’ Alaimoa’s crew were on the wharf and later when somebody called out that a man had been stabbed, lie did not go down or allow any member of the crew to go, because he thought it was a ruse to start a fight between the crews. He did not see Childs being put down the gangway by Hinds. A remand was granted.
