ZINGARA STRANDED

ON SOUTH SIDE OF SOUTH WALL The m.s. Zingara with a cargo of 100,000 feet of sawn timber leit the wharf this morning about two o’clock, bound for Wellington. The bar was wide and deep, and the sea 'fairly smooth. When oil the bar, a chain ol the steering gear broke and the vessel got out of control and sheered off to the south, and getting in the breakers, was washed ashore just outside the south wall. Thbre is a steep bank at this point and it is thought that with the help of a tug that no difficulty would be experienced in hauling the vessel off at high tide. The sea to-day is fairly smooth. The cargo ol timber is being jettisoned and arrangements are being made with a view tq_ the Greymouth tug being obtained for towage purposes, but the question of insurance of the tug is holding up a definite decision at present. LATER. The arrangements for the use ol the Grey Harbour Hoard’s tug Westland were duly made, and the tug left Greymouth at 11 o’clock lor Hokitika, mriving about 1 p.m. Before the tug’s arrival the tide had made and the sea increasing in roughness. the Zingara was being struck, by die seas, which were breaking over her and lifting her bodily. J'roiu noon onwards the vessel was buffeted, the increasing sea making assistance all the harder to be given. .
