A FIRE. (By Telegraph—Press Association). GISBORNE, Jan. 12. Tokoninru Bay Fanners’ Store at Waima .was destroyed by this morning. Nothing was saved. Tho building was insured for £l5O and the stock for £BOO. STOLEN BUTTER. WELLINGTON, January 11. Robert McKay, aged 48, pleaded not guilty to a charge of obtaining 42 pounds of butter, knowing it to have been stolen. The police stated that the accused, who bad a small confectionery business, had bad butter offered him by a message boy employed by a restaurant, at Is a pound. Alter buying two or three lots, be asked where the butter came from. 'l’lie boy said that it bad been stolen from a warehouse by a friend with whom be was sharing the- proceeds.. The accused, nevertheless, bought- another lot of butter. 'Die accused was fined C2l), in default three months’ imprisonment. CAUG HT SH OP LI FT I NO. AUCKLAND, January 12. A charge of shoplifting was preferred against Marie Enright (39), a married -woman, who was fined -Co or one month, when she appeared at tho Police Court. Chief Detective Hammond said the woman took a piece of Haney work displayed for sale, and was seen with it by one of tile shop assistants. As soon as she know she was detected she threw it away. The piece ol fancy work was of no use to her and it- -appeared she had given way to sudder temptation. CHILD’S BODY RECOVERED. NAPIER, January 11 The body of Roy Oxbrow, aged the second victim rif the Tuki Dik* double drowning fatality was recovered in the surf yesterday. A FIRE. WELLINGTON. Jan. 14. Shortly before three o’clock yesterday morning, the sole occupant of 35 Cambridge Terrace, found the building to be on fire, and escaped through a window. The building which was two-storied and contained five rooms, was occupied by J. Watts, a bootmaker. The Brigade was called in speedily and extinguished the blaze, the origin of which is unknown.

Left digging in the garden yesterday’, and apparently in good spirits, Tollu Shirteliffe was found dead in a gas-filled room four hours later An inqliest was held before Mr F K Hunt this morning, when Klizaberth Shirteliffe said that her husband who lived with her at 18 Lillington Road, was an old age pensioner .his age being 71. He was a gardener by occupation. Her husband was digging rn the garden when she and her daughter left the liou.se about 12.30 vesterdiiy afternoon. Shirteliffe was discovered a 4.30 in the kitchen. While bathing at mid-day to-day William Robert Walther Plowman, aged 22 years, dived into the water from the harbour groyne, and apparently struck a pile. He was rescued by a companion. It was found that his back was badly injured, lie being moved to the hospital in a serious condition. MOTOR- CYCLISTS HURT. GISBORNE, Jan 13. As the result of a collision between a motor car and a motor cycle on Saturday evening, John Jennings, aged 25 . driver of the cycle, and Joseph Waors’ aged 20, pillion rider, were admitted to the hospital, but their injuries. were not serious.
