The Samoan chief, Tamasese, who is serving a sentence in Auckland Gaol, has instructed his lawyer to apply for a. writ of habeas corpus, on the grounds that he should have been imprisoned in Samoa, and not in New Zealand. A watersider named Jack Alai lev. aged seventy, fell into the hold of the Tamaroa this .afternoon, receiving injuries from which lie died. Deceased was married. He had worked for the Shaw Savill Company for 'ls years. COURT MARTIAL. AUCKLAND. Jan. 11. A court-martial is being held aboard the warship Diomede. The prisoner is C.P.O. Robert Lindsay Parker, charged with smuggling whisky aboard. The defence is a general denial. LATER. The Court found Parker guilty rtf smuggling whisky into a naval base, and disrated him to leading seamen, tie was also deprived of two good condiiel badges. HARBOUR TRAGEDY. WELLINGTON. .Tan. 10. The dead body of Mrs Annie Clarkson. 39, wife of AVillia.ni Bowes Clarkson, Ron loot t, Street, was recovered from the harbour at 7 a.m., near the Taranaki Street wharf. Apparently, she lmd been in the water for some hours. FATAL FALL FROM BALCONY. WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. A young man. Frederick Ivan Eaton, fell from the balcony of a house in Palmer Street last night. His neck was broken. He bad gone out there with three other companions for fresh air. Deceased was a member of the Old Roys’ Senior Elovchi, and Senior Association football, playing for the Y.M.C.A. ELECTION COURT. WELLINGTON, Jan. 12. Monday, January 28th, has been fixed as the date of hearing, by tlw? Election Court, of the petition against the return of 11. M. Bush worth (Country Party) as member for the Bay of Islands. The place of hearing will probably be Kaikohc. OBITUARY. WELLINGTON, Jan. 12. A private cable reports the death of Dr Norman Hales, as a result of an accident. Ho was a well-known amateur singer and actor and about twelve or thirteen years ago left for the United States where lie joined the stage professionally.
