BUSH FIRES
CONTINUE THE Hi HAVOC. MANY HOUSES BURNT. (Australian Press Association). (United Service). (Received this day at 5.30. n.m.) SYDNEY. January 11. Bush lires are now devastating the southern districts of the State. A great tire at Whipstick destroyed seven houses and a wattle hark treatment plant valued at £30,000. A schoolhouso was the only building in the village that survived the flames. Several farms at Lochiel were re-, duced to ruins. At Numhagga, the sehoblhouse, teacher’s residence, and post office were destroyed. The occupants were forced to flee Tor their lives. Thousands of acres of grass, and many miles of fencing were demolish ed. Many stock perished. In some centres lire fighters have been working ceaselessly for two days and nights, endeavouring to check the fires. Flames in parts of the ruined "areas reached a hundred feet high. Extensive fires also occurred in the suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne.
