GAS TAPPED
IN AN SOFT. WELL

GISBORNE, January 11
When drilling a well at Patutiiki, a sub-station of Waikaremoana hydroelectric scheme, a contractor tapped a supply of gas at 80 feet, which shot a column of water 25 'loot into the air. The water was bubbling' with gas, the nature of which has not been ascertained, though probably it is marshgas, such as lias been found and utilised on Poverty Bay flats. ARREST’ FOR BURGLARY. DUNEDIN, Jan. 10.
James Ernest Foote was arrested on a charge of breaking and entering the shop of .Frederick Townsend and stealing jewellery valued at £3OOO. lie was remanded till January 18th.
