FLOOD DAMAGE

IN SOUTH WESTLAND. ft was perhaps not unexpected that the high. Hood tin’s morning should do considerable damage at Inter-Wanga-nui, where the Little Wanganui river has been overflowing each flood. Today's effect, however, appears to be the most serious of the late floods. The details so far are rather meagre, '.■lit it is understood the County bridge on La Fontaine road has been carried away, also a private bridge on Alfred road used by Mr Wall. The latter structure is reported to be gone altogether. The reports to hand indicate that the river overflowed in great body at the breach it was proposed to protect. Timber and debris were brought down through the swamp into La Fontaine creek. • and so through the Flat, later to join the Big Wanganui river. . 1 Fears are entertained for Petersen’s road bridge,, also crossing La Fontaine. but no reports are to hand respecting this structure yet.
