MOUNT COOK CLIMBED
LADY MOUNTAINEER’S RECORD TTMARU, January 8. The Mount Cook Motor Company received advice from the Hermitage late on .Monday night that Miss K. Gardiner, of Liverpool. England, accompanied by Guide V. Williams and Porter L. Cuban, bad made a suceessfii’ ascent of -Mount Cook (12,347 ft) in ldfi hours, which is a record time for a lady climber. The party left Haast Hut at 2 a.m. on Sunday, and by 9.L a.in. had reached Summit Rock. The going up to this stage had been fairly hard, the ice-glazed rocks being very difficult to negotiate. After having breakfast at Summit Rock, the party proceeded and reached the summit at 10.15 a.m.
From the top of the mountain a very fine view was obtained, both coasts be jug visible. Owing to a very cold wind which prevailed, the party commenced the downward journey alter a ten minutes’ rest, and the Haast Hut was reached at 5.45 p.m.-
M.iss Gardiner is the first lady to climb Mount Cook since February, 1924, and Guide Williams lias now made five successful ascents.
