POTATOES RISE. (Australian Press Association). (United Service). SYDNEY, January 8. Owing to short supplies, potatoes advanced £2 per ton to £25 for new a.nd 023 for old. CHESS. PERTH, January 8. Australian chess championship was won by Craekanthorp, of New South Wales. Yoiinkman (of West Australia) was runner-up. A STRIKE. SYDNEY, Jan. 8. Following a refusal by timber workers to do any Saturday work, the Secretary of the Timber Merchants’ Assn, has advised the Federal Industrial Rcg.strar there of a strike in the industry. The Secretary states four hours’ pay would ho deducted from the men’s wages for not working on Saturday. This is the first strike in the industry since 1917.
