He commanded the Russian Armies in 1914.15. A DIFFICULT POSITION. ' PARIS, Jan. G. Tho death of Grand Duke Nicholas has created a difficult situation for millions of Russian emigres throughout Europe He was head of a secret military organisation, embracing practically all exiled ex-officers. The Grand Duke lived in state at Antibes, and directed a large general staff. Tho house was defended by machine.guns day and night, which prevented several planned attempts at assassination. The organisation was ready to return to Russia and establish a military dictatorship the moment the Soviet rule failed.
The Grand Duke’s organisation was opposed to Grand Duke Cyril’s claim to the Russian throne. Nicholas was never a claimant, but it is believed he designated in his will the candidate that he favoured for the Crown.
CHESS PLAYER DEAD. WELLINGTON, January 7. Obituary.—R. J. Barnes, accountant, and a well known chess player, prominent for years as champion five times, and as runner up nine times in New Zealand congresses.
