OBITUARY. SIR CHARLES MACARA. RUGBY. January 2. Sir Charles Mncara, the well-known cotton magnate, who died to-day at his home at Altrincham. Cheshire, was recognised all over tin* world as one of the kings of the cotton industry. Despite his age lie had applied his wisdom and experience since the war to grappling with the troubles of Lancashire. He was chairman of the Pro visional Emergency Cotton Commit tecset up in 1922. From 1892 to 192(5 he was chairman of the Manchester Cot ton Employers’ Association, and ifrom 1891 l-o 1914 president of tho English Federation of Master Cotton Spinners. Outside his business sphere Sir Charles Macara was prominently iden tified with the National Lifeboat move ment.

An Exchequer return reveals a heavy reduction of over £21,000,000 in income tax receipts, but tins is mainly explained by the fact that., owing to changes in the machinery oif collection, the loceipts from house and property tax last year covered a period o ei-ditemi instead of twelve months.
