OUTSTANDING
THE FEAT OF THE YEAR. A PAPER’S ENQUIRY. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Received this day at 9. a.m.) NEW YORK, January 3. The “Daily News,” an illustrated newspaper which has a regular column “Enquiring Photographers,” asked six people on the street what was the outstanding news event in 1928. Three replied: “The Presidential election,” and the remaining three said: “ The flight of the Southern Cross to Australia.” Among the latter one said: “ It was the first conclusive proof we had off the practicability of commercial flying for such great distances. The flight was a complete report of progress in aviation.” Another said: “The most interesting thrilling event of the year was tin* wonderful flight. 1 was' greatly thrilled to read the radio reports announcing the aeroplane’s progress.” The third said: “It showed the possibilities of aviation and also strengthened the already strong friendship between this country and Australia.” Two of the three were women.
