DANISH RESEARCH SHIP. INVESTIGATIONS ON N.Z. COAST. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, Jan. 1. After a stay of a fortnight in Auckland the Danish research ship Dana will leave on Wednesday morning for the Hauraki Gulf and cruise down the East Coast of New Zealand. The Dana will conduct investigations on behalf of the Marine Department in the Hauraki Gulf and will afterwards continue the taking ol observations down the coast as far as Dunedin, where, however, she will not call unless stress iof weather makes it advisable to do so. She will return and call at Wellington, which will bo the Dana’s linai port in New Zealand.
GLADE HOUSE DESTROYED. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 1. A report was received here this (‘veiling that Glade House, at Lake Te Allan, was destroyed by fire at noon to-day. The building consisted of between twenty and thirty rooms, the contents of which arc reported to have been saved. It is stated that the fire originated in the boiler room. There are between sixty and seventy guests at Te Anan and in the meantime they will he accommodated in marquees and tents. Business will be carried on in this fashion indefinitely, hut this will not interfere with tourist traffic, as it is not necessary for visitors to the Milford track to remain at Glade House.
GIRL DROWNED. GOT INTO DIFFICULTIES IN >SURF. CHRISTCHURCH, lan. 2. A little girl named Nellie Howard, aged toil, was drowned at New Brighton on Monday. Shi: went into the surf at about four o’clock with her two elder sisters and Joyce Webb. They were playing in the surf. As there was a strong undercurrent, the three children got into difficulties near Bligli Street. The two elder girls managed to get to safety. Nellie disappeared under the water and was not {seen again.
CAR AND TRUCK COLLIDE. THREE PEOPLE INJURED. WAIMATE, Dec. 31. Abrasions and a broken collarbone were suffered by Frederick Jones when a service car and a light truck collided this afternoon. The.,truck was conveying seven persons from Studholme, and the only occupants injured were Air Jones and Misses Adamson and Anderson, who 'both suffered head injuries and shock. None of the passengers in the car were hurt.
CAR FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 2. On Monday afternoon a car driven by Mr Do Latour, of Grange Hills. South Canterbury, was struck by tin 4.33 Christehureh-Ashburton train, and as a. result, one child, a daughter of 31 r Benson, of Timaru, died, and six other persons were injured, three very seriously.
