WELLINGTON, January 2
The main party of the Australian howling loams arrived at Wellington to-day by tin; Marama with their wives and a number of children, the steamer carrying about S 4. With those who arrived by the .southern boat the other day there are now about 120 Australian bowling visitors in Wellington for tile Dominion tourney.

WELLINGTON, January 2
Edgar William Wilkins, aged 'l2, a steward, was sentenced to six months to-day for stealing C l lbs and was convicted and discharged on three charges of false pretences, it was stated that in 1925 lie defrauded three people in Wellington by representing lie had obtained a position as chief steward on an imaginary ship at Napier.
DISASTROUS EIRE
HASTINGS, January 2
Hawke’s Day Farmers’ Co-operative Association Ltd., Hastings branch, at the corner of .Market and Queen Streets, consisting of a large grocery, boot and shoe, glass, china, and crockery, ironmongery, implement and engineering departmenits, together with full stocks, was completely destroyed by fire this morning at 7 o’clock. The lire must have been smouldering for a considerable time because when the engine arrived promptly, the building was standing, but before leads of water were laid the flames burst through the roof and ran from end to end of the structure, which collapsed in ruins. Nothing was saved of the stocks, which included oils and benzine, as well as eartridges, gelignite and detonators, amongst which the brigade had to work at much 'peril, but when the gelignite and detonators were removed to a place of safety the principal danger was passed. Cases 'iroin oils exploded, blowing out the windows. ' Fireman Price received injuries requiring medical attention. With six leads of .water on, the lire was subdued at about 8.110. The building is now a mere shell. It was of wood aiid iron, standing in its own block and was separated by a seclion from the Country Club on the one side, and by a right-of-way from the Association’s garage on the rear end, neither of which buildings suffered. The building and contents were fully covered. Stocks and contents £10,500 and building £BOO in Alliance and Royal.
AUCKLAND PINES AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. Henry Emanuel was fined £IOO for weeping a common gaining house. John Henry Wheeler, for using his home for the same purpose was fined £SO.
FALL OYER CLIFF,
CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 2
C. Walsh, .of Spreydon, employed in one of the mechanical departments of the “Lyttelton Times” fell over a cliff at Taylor’s Mistake, on Monday. He was taken to the Christchurch Hospital where it was found that his skull was fractured and his head was badly knocked about.
CHILD KILLED.
AUCKLAND, Jan. 2,
Ivan Moris Desmond Grey, aged six, was killed at Mt. Rex (near-Jlelens-ville) on Monday. A companion, Douglas Graham, aged 13, fired a shot gun at a rabbit, and Grey, being in the line of fire, was killed instantly.

C. Walsh, who fell over the cliif at Taylor’s Mistake on Monday, died in the hospital.
DROPPED DEAD
CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 2
Charles James Pearce, married with three children, and one of the leaders of the Christchurch Co-operative Party which recently secured the slaughtering contract at the city abattoiis, dropped dead at his work, this morning. Pearce had been suffering from heart trouble.
OBITUARY. DUNEDIN, Jan. 2,
Obituary—Rev. John Ryley, aged 94. He was associated with the very early history of the Presbyterian Church, in New Zealand and was a missionary in Hampden in 1864.
