THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Tourist Traffic. From time to time moralists and social purists of various kinds declaim against the efforts of the Government to attract tourists to New Zealand, and accuse our users of vulgarising and commercialising our scenery for sordid gain. I would recommend critics ot this type to note the fact that the British Government is “sponsoring a scheme to attract visitors to Britain” hy means of a large association advertising in. every country in the world. It is pointed out hy the advocates of this policy that while Britain had only 400.000 tourist guests last year, France entertained nearly two million visitors, and relieved them of something like £100,00! 1,000. The Americans konst that the tourists spend at least that sum abroad every year. There seems to lie no good reason why,. Britain should not get her share ofr it if she advertises her scenic attractions sufficiently, and precisely the same line of argument applies to New Zealand.
