DEFY GOVERNMENT

CAPETOWN, December 27
There is a serious position on the Nnnmqualand diamond fields in consequence of the Government’s prohibition of prospecting. Recently, the Government yielded to political pressure owing to the disastrous effects of the drought, and the prohibition was applied only to areas abutting the coast. The discriminatory decisions of officials accentuated complaints. While a permit was granted to prospect a farm only three mlies inland, diggei s vigorously protested . and talked of rushing the State diggings at Alexander Bay. They demand the release of men who disagreed with prohibition and notified the Magistrate at Port Nollotli that they would start prospecting to-day at Buehuberg, which lias prove diamoudiferous. The Government despatched 21 selected police with- machine guns on motor lorries on Monday night. They are expected to reach their destination, over four hundred miles, mainly desert, to-dav. A warning has been issued that they will not- tolerate lawlessness.
