INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. HEAVY DEATH ROLL. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Received this day at 10.30. a.m.) WASHINGTON, December 28. Nearly two thousand persons died of inilueii/.a or pontunonia in seventyeight. large American cities last week. The Commerce Department reported that, beginning with 608 deaths in these cities for the week ending November 3rd, the list has grown weekly until it reached the total of 1982. For the week ended December 2nd, reports disclosed that influenza caused 710 deaths and pneumonia 1272. .Meantime the United States Public Health Service reported 210,562 new influenza cases in thirty-nine Stat(>s for the same week. This figure was multiplied by) five to give the estimated total of J,202,810 new cases altogether, as officials believe the state records only comprise one-fifth ot the total cases.
ERENCII PENSIONERS. (Received this day at 10.30. a.m.) PARIS, December 27. Two and a-hall million persons, or more than six per cent of the population of Franco are still pensioners. Of these 625.000 are widows owing to the war and there are nearly a million disabled soldiers and sailors. A parliamentary vote in 1929 will he for £42,000,000, widows to receive 240 s annually, plus 140 s per child. r Lhe hill is being introduced into the Chain her of Deputies presuming 400,000 of wartime missing arc dead, and also providing that in future wars those missing lor two years shall legally ho regarded as dead and their wives be eligible to rc-marry.
