RACING APPEAL

Racing Conference gave judgment, on the appeal against* the decision of the Auckland District Com-, mittee in connection with the ownership of the horse Cherry Ripe. The substance of the charge was that in May, 1923, Doctor C. 0. Murphy became a partner with William Ejiun, a bookmaker, in the horse Cherry Ripe, and in the subsequent racing of the horse in Australia and New Zealand Murphy asserted that lie bought the horse from Ryan in May 1922 and that 1 after that date Ryan had*no interest , ■ / in the horse. The District Committed by a majority decided that the charge against Murphy was not proved. The Judges were of opinion that the charge against Murphy was ly established, and- strengthened by| Ins own statements and conduct. The offence was serious and deliberate, and continued over a period of years. The appeal was allowed. Murphy was convicted of corrupt practice and was disqualified for five years.
