The Lyttelton “Times” reports: Winter conditions returned to Christchurch on Thursday. Exceptionally heavy rain set in at 7.15 a.m. and continued almost without a stop until 5 p.m. The streets then began to dry, tin l clouds rolled away, and for tbe rest of tbe night the clear skies were studded with bright stars. After 6 p.m., tlie air became much colder, and had a deeded wintry feel. Tim rainfall between 8.15 a.in. and 9.15 a-.in. was more than a fifth of an inch. By 5 p.m. when it stopped, tho fall had been 1.52 in. The rainfall this mouths has been mure than five inches. On oniy three occasions since 1902 lias this been exceeded during the whole month of December.
The Christmas stockings at the St. Saviour’s orphanages will- benefit considerably this year by gifts from Hokitika. Last week the All Saints’ Sunday School Held a Christmas party when, instead of each child receiving a present, each child present brought a gift for the orphanage. About seventy young people were present and a large parcel of gifts resulted. A happy evening was spent in. games and music. On Thursday the Young Peoples Guilds gave a party for the same worthy object and again a box full of toys and gifts were donated. These have all been despatched to the orphanage and the kindly thought of tho Hokitika young people should bring joy to tho hearts of many in the institution. Hie Kindgergarten Department are having a Christmas party this afternoon when 1 Father Christmas is to dispense gifts to the little ones from a Christmas tree.
