HORNTAIL BORER

ARRIVAL OF PARASITES

NELSON, Dec. 19

Tin* first consignments of the parasite for use against the honitail borer of pine trees hare been received by tiie Cawthron Institute. The parasites, which arrived in excellent condition from England, were sent from the Earn ha m Royal Parasite Laboratory of the Imperial Bureau of Entomology. Owing to the prevalence of neglected wood lots and small plantations, which servo as breeding grounds for destructive tree pests, throughout the Dominion. the horntail borer is now universally established, and though not known to injure healthy trees, it is almost invariably found in weakened or damaged ones. The parasite lays its eggs m the boring lavae of the horntail.

The work of controlling this pest is part of an extensive campaign inaugurated by Dr Miller for the protection of the ever-extending exotic forests of the Dominion from the depredations of destructive insects.
