LAUNCH ABLAZE

CREW’S NARROW ESCAPE. AUCKLAND, December 19. The cargo launch Lone Star, of 40 tons, owned hy Compton and .Morrison, of Auckland, and manned by Neil Compton and W. Kirman, was destroyed hy lire to-night. It was bound for Arkles May with a heavy load of cargo, including benzine, when engine trouble developed in a heavy sea. An endeavour was made to turn hack, but tlm engine then failed completely, and while the crow were trying to start it again, Humes suddenly enveloped the engine and soon had a strong hold. The crew throw I lie benzine cargo overboard, and, with the spread of the flames, their plight became desjH’rate. Finally they had to take to the dinghy, which was almost swamped before they readied the shore. The launch subsequently drifted on to the rocks at North Head, and was later scuttled, to prevent her becoming a danger to navigation.
