SERIOUS ACCIDENT

MOTORIST FALLS DOWN SHAFT

SOAIE 80ft. DEEP.

This morning Mr H. H. Doughty, of Christchurch, commercial traveller, in company with his mother-in-law, Mrs Rennie, left Keller’s Hotel, on route to Christchurch by car. About 0.30 o’clock, when nearing Dillmaiis, Mr Doughty left the car to gather some ferns and foxgloves growing, close to the road, and hearing a noise Airs Rennie found her companion had disappeared. She found that he had fallen down an old shaft, and could hear groans. She at once went to Dillmaiis and gave the alarm and assistance was soon forthcoming, men from the mill nearby giving their assistance. It was found that the shaft was about 80 feet deep, but luckily it was dry. Ropes were utilised and one of the rescuers went down and the man was brought to the surface. It was found that he was considerably smashed about the head and face, while his back was also injured. After receiving attention from Dr. Booth, of Kuniara, he was brought down to Westland Hospital for further treatment. On enquiry at one o’clock we were advised that the patient was conscious. He was very badly hurt about the head, face and back, but no bones were broken.
