LONDON, Dec. 12
The “Daily News’’ Constantinople correspondent states that a syndicate of London capitalists have entered into a bargain with the Turkish Government to purchase the ex-Sultan’s jewels, except those of historic interest.
The price mentioned is five millions. It is a wonderful collection; the accumulation of centuries. It was once valued at 360 millions, which is generally regarded as exaggerated. The most valuable items are the throne of Shah Ismail of Persia, a jewelled dagger of Mahomet the Conqueror, and a jewelled sword of Constantine, Emperor of Byzantium. The Turkish Government in 1927 commissioned a Swiss jeweller to value the collection. He said the task was impossible. In an underground vault he found tray upon tray piled with mixed loose stones of unbelievable s'zo. It was recently rumoured that Tvcma; intended’ to soli Ihr jewels to improve Turkish finances. A Paris firm then valued a portion at twenty millions.
