11l refill'd to a paragraph under the a 1)0 vo caption appearing in Una column recently, a correspondent sends the following from “The London Gazetteer.’- vol. in., 1825, “containing a description of various countries, kingdoms, stales, cities, towns, etc., of the known world ” New York: A city or the United States, a capital of the foregoing State, is situated on the south end of New York island, at the confluence of Hudson and East rivers. It extends along the Hudson about two mih's. and its circumference is about seven and a-half miles. The streets „f the ancient or lower part of the city are irregular, many of them very narrow and crooked: but several of those of the northern part are very spacious, run in right lines, and are intersected by others at right angles. The principal one is Hroadway, which is three miles in length, extending in a .straight line through the middle of the city. The houses were formerly built of wood and a great part of them make but a mean appearance; but all those ol them elegant. . . .Among the principal public buildings and institutions are a city hall, a custom house, the New York hospital, the lunatic aslyum, 'an almshouse, a penitentiary, an orphan aslyum. a goal, a bridewell, a state prison, an arsenal, a theatre, a museum. 11 banks. 10 insurance offices, eight market houses, and fifty six places of public worship for different denominations. . . Seven newspapers are printed daily, and there are several and science. . . . The city and har--1 -t have been lately fortified against the assaults of a naval enemy at a very great expense. . Every tree male citizen possessing of freehold estate of the value of 50 dollars is a qualified elector. Population about 1.50.000
