THE COUNCIL.

WELLINGTON Dec. 7. Tlie Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day.

Alter a motion was passed expressing sympathy with the King in Ins illness, the Council rose till 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday. THE HOUSE. The House resumed at 2.30 p.m. The Sneaker reported he had submitted to his Excellency the Address as approved by the House. In the course of his reply His Excellency said lie was hilly conscious that his ad risers should possess the confidence of the House, and as he was assured this was not .so at- the present lime, he would take measures to secure a new administration.

The Prime Minister moved that His Excellency’s reply lie recorded in the •Journals ol the House and at the same time intimated he would tender his resignation to His Excellency as soon as it was convenient to His Excellency. Sir .Joseph Ward, on behalf of the United Party paid a tribute to the generosity of Air Coates in offering to aid in the interests of the country, if his aid should he sought. He (Ward) would make a statement later on, as to his policy. At the present he was unable to say whether or not another session would be necessary. He desired to avoid it if possible. Mr Holland added his tribute to the manly and clean way in which Mr Coates had always fought, and when the Prime Minister replied the House at 2.45 p.m. rose until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesda v.

WELLINGTON, Dec. 8,

lion. ,J. («. Coates has tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and that i his colleagues, to his Excellency the [Jovernor-Gcneral.

It is expected that Sir Joseph Ward will be sent for to-day and asked to form a new Cabinet.
