PLACING A PATENT

ADVICE TO INVENTORS

AUCKLAND, December 3

“ I’ve nothing to say except that wo have managed to solve a problem which has baffled the experts of all countries for a very long time,” said Mr C. H. Gardner, general manager of the Avondale Brick and Tile Company, who returned by the Niagara this afternoon, when he was asked a question concerning a patent cypher he had taken to America and Britain somo fifteen months ago. “The invention has been taken up by the British Government, whose departmental officers I found to bo—contrary to common belief—keen, businesslike, and very prompt in action. We are also dealing with tho very important commercial aspects of tho O’Brien patent cypher.” “Perhaps I should sound a note of warning to inventors and investors,” said Mr Gardner. “It is very difficult to sell patents in Britain or in America. With.very rare exceptions neither country is giving cash for patents, and in Britain it is hard to place even a license to manufacture. I know of two very good New Zealand patents which have not yet been placed in America. It is only fair to the British manufacturers to say that both patents had been very badly handled, owing to the inexperience of tho vendors.”
