The first municipal and shire elections m New South Wales under adult suffrage were held yesterday. Labour’s bid to secure all-round control failed. Five hundred endorsed candidates entered the field, but, while they .strengthened Labour’s position at Paddington, Newtown, Marrickville, Bcdfoni, Gh;' e and Alexandria, not one was elected. At Randwick and elsewhere, their showing was unexpectedly weak. They were badly set back in Newcastle.
PILOT’S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. SYDNEY, Dec. 3. An aeroplanei containing T lying Officer D. Carroll and Mechanic Chadwick, flying from Sydney to Melbourne to-day, struck a tree top near Mittagong. Chadwick and a portion of the aeroplane’s tail were left in. the tice. from which Chadwick fell forty feet. He sustained injuries to the hack and a deep cut on his check. The machine continued flying, hut struck another tree and remained among the boughs, sixty feet from the ground. Carroll was tossed out, but his fee* became wedged in the wreckage, and he hung head downwards until he unwound his neck scarf, which h" wound round the tree and managed to right himself. Tie then slid to tin ground practically unhurt, and walked two miles for assistance for his companion, who was in a bad way.
