THE BAR AT THE CLUB

It lias been decidedly tentatively that the bar at the Ashburton Club slia.il bo opened next Monday. This, decision was reached at a protracted meeting of the club on Wednesday evening, it 'being anticipated that the Gazette notice of the result of the liquor referendum will be issued this week.

Applications for the position of steward were received, and an anoointment was ma.de, the success!ill applicant coining from Tiinaru. New equipment lias been installed in the bar, but no structural alterations have been made, as the bar. under no-liccnse restrictions, has been used for dispensing soft drinks, cigarettes and tobacco.

It is understood that a small bar is to be opened in the billiard room at the dull for dispensing soft drinks after 6 o’clock. BOOTH WANTED AT RACES.

Since the re-arrangement of the electoral boundaries there has been considerable discussion regarding the likelihood of liquor booths being conducted at the Ash-burton Racecourse during race meetings.

The issue of licenses for su.cli booths rests with the Licensing Committee, in ibis case Hie Ellesmere Committee which will bold office fill the election of a new Mid-Canterbury Committee next March. Ibe booths lire usually conducted by the firm which carries out the catering.
