PETS LIBERATED

MAN’S PECULIAR BEHAVIOUR.

AUCKLAND. Nov. 23

Apparently considering himself the animals’ friend a man set to work in Queen Street last evening to set free tne puppies and birds in .John AAalker’s pets shop. The premises had not been closed for long when the man kicked a hole in a window and crawled through it. He was given an enthusiastic welcome by a dozen puppies in the window, hut proceeded on into the shop, and finding a bucket of water helped the poultry to a drink. Then be returned to the pups, which he carelully carried out on to the footpath. Another trip was made into the shop and the “animals’ friend” returned outside with all' the pups and dogs he could find on the promises. These he carefully placed on the footpath along with the first batch, which were enjoying their new found freedom and a dish of water which their champion had placed in front of them. By this time a crowd had collected.

When the man was interrupted he was in the. act of opening a large cage containing numbers of finches, lovebirds and other tropical birds. It would have been impossible to catch these had they been liberated.

Tbe sequel was heard in the Police Court this morning. “This looks serious, but T would like time to go into tbe case, as I believe accused was under the influence of liquor at the time and the matter may not be as serious when the full facts are known.” was the way Sub-Inspector M’Garthy introduced Garnet AA’olseley M’Minn (forty-six) to Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. M’Minn was charged with breaking and entering by day the shop ol John AValkcr, animal dealer, Queen St.,' with intent to commit a crime. M’Alinn was remanded till Monday next.
