A FIRE. (By Telegraph—Press Association). NAPIER, Nov. 29. A large building known as Faulkner’s coach factory in Hastings street was totally destroyed by fire this morning. Wooden buildings nearby were saved by excellent brigade work and a good water supply. Messrs Holmes and Roberts. Ltd., and Wrioss were occupiers. The latter were uninsured but the former arc covered by £4.10 in the South British. The building was covered by £'(»0 divided in South British and Atlas. HOUSE BURNT. . NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 29. A four roomed house on Mangorei Road, owned and occupied bv L. Deighton, was destroyed by fire early this morning. Nothing was saved. Insured for £4OO, furniture and piano £.IGo. OFF TO ANTARCTICA. DUNEDIN, Nov. 29. A satisfactory report of ice conditions having been received from the whaler Larsen, the City of New York will probably leave to-morrow night for the Bay of Whales.- “■ PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY. ‘ AUCKLAND, Nov. 29. At the Presbyterian Assembly, Rev. Tipler (Dunedin) moved that the Assembly declares-its conviction that the: University of New Zealand should be empowered to grant degrees in, Divinity as in Britain, Europe and America, and instructs the Theological College Committee to suggest any movement to bring about this desirable reform. This was carried unanimously. Professor John Dickie, of Dunedin, was appoined the first Principal of the Theological Hall. RETIRING. WELLINGTON, Nov. 29. After a long service on the Bench in Wellington and other parts of New Zealand, W. G. Riddell', ' principal magistrate in Wellington, and second senior in the Dominion, is retiring at the end of December. He was educated at Dunedin and graduated to the Otago University. He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1898, became relieving magistrate and in 1907 was settled in Wellington.
