NOTES FOR FARMERS

EXPERIMENTAL PLOTS. Apart from the experimental plots established in North Otago last year with the object of ascertaining the fertilisers that are best adapted for the rent-..al of the pastures the department ,s this year making experiments in regard to wheat. Co-operative plots have been put down at Papakaio on the farm of Air I). Borrie. All experiment lias been made with the use of sulphate of ammonia, and on the farm of Mr M. M‘ Pliee 11 irate of soda has been used. It is too early yet to make a definite pronouncement, hut the present indications are that sulphate of ammonia will produce better results than nirate of soda.

THE PTG INDUSTRY

Air C. Carrington, of Peebles, Otago, has engaged in the pig industry on a somewhat extensive scale. The breed of pig he has selected is the Tamwortli Berkshire cross, which appears to produce the bacon that is in demand on the Dominion market. Air Carrington, who feeds bis pigs chiefly on lucerne, recenty sent a consignment of pigs to the Addington market. These realised £:) 17s Gel per head. After deducting freight and charges, however, the net return was £3 10s per head.

A GOOD HERD

As showing what can be done hv judicious culling and feeding, it may he mentioned that Mr James Martin, of Alma. Otago, has a small dairy herd of 10 Ayrshires which have produced remarkable yields. The average of the herd for the month of October were as follows:—Ten cows average 13501 b of milk. 58.94 lbs of butter fat of 4.3 test at Is 6d per lb. This represents Jb4 8s per cow for the month. Two of the cows gave 75.901 b. and 77.401 b of Initterfat respectively. Tlie herd includes four heifers, and their average was 11741 b. of milk, 4.5 test, and 53.46 lb. of butterfat.
